Use TeamOrgChart to Audit Your Microsoft Entra ID Employee Data
Employee data can look perfectly reasonable when it is viewed one record at a time in Microsoft Entra ID. However, once those records are turned into an organizational structure, data quality issues can become much easier to spot and their impact becomes much clearer.
Common data issues include:
- An employee with no manager assigned.
- Empty or missing data fields.
- Circular references, where reporting relationships loop back on themselves.
- Invalid email addresses.
- Duplicate accounts or identifiers.
- Service, test or disabled accounts appearing in the organizational structure.
The Data Health functionality in TeamOrgChart can audit the Entra ID data used to build your organization chart and help identify these types of issues.
TeamOrgChart includes a selection of default checks, including checks for:
- Non-unique IDs.
- Missing basic employee information.
- Invalid email addresses.
- Circular references.
You can also create your own Data Health checks to suit the specific requirements of your organization and the employee data you maintain.
To access the Data Health page, open a chart that is connected to the Entra ID data you want to audit, then navigate to Data Health from the chart toolbar.
Select Run Analysis to run the configured checks. Once the analysis has completed, scroll down to the chart data section to review the results.
If any issues are identified, you can view a list of the people affected. From there, you can jump directly to the relevant person’s profile in Microsoft Entra ID to review or correct the underlying employee data.
When should you audit your data?
It is a good idea to audit your employee data at key points when the structure or underlying information may have changed significantly.
Useful times to run a Data Health check include:
- When first creating an org chart.
- Before publishing an org chart company-wide.
- After a restructure.
- Following a large change in your employee data.
- Periodically as part of your employee data governance process.
Regular checks can help you identify issues before they become embedded in your organization chart or start affecting how employees understand the structure of the business.
Can TeamOrgChart make changes to my Entra ID data?
TeamOrgChart only reads the Entra ID data that has been approved for use through Microsoft Graph.
For charts connected to Entra ID, TeamOrgChart does not copy or store the underlying employee data. It only stores the chart metadata required to configure your organization chart and any additional information you add using TeamOrgChart.
TeamOrgChart cannot edit or delete your Entra ID data. Any corrections need to be made in the original data source, helping ensure that your employee information remains controlled in Microsoft Entra ID.
